I have a '07 SportTrac Limited V8. I want to replace the stock muffler with a Flowmaster / Gibson / Dynaflow, to get a deeper / mellow sound and get better MPG (hopefully) because of less restriction. Don't want to do a "cat back" system as they are just TOO expensive. Any recommendations on what muffler (mfr / part number?) to use that will replace the stock one with no additional exhaust modifications? Why pay for new pipes when the stock ones are perfect? Thanks for help, suggestions and comments.

You can get a muffler put on without having to run new pipes. I just got a Flowmaster 40 series put on earlier today, the shop I took it to asked 100 for the muffler and install. They cut out the old muffler, put in the flowmaster and an extension pipe since the flowmaster was shorter than my stock muffler, and I was back on the road in about 20 minutes. I like the 40 series muffler, it is louder and deeper than stock, which is what I wanted, and the drone that everyone mentions really isn't that bad. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is a little high pitched for my liking at higher rpms, but that's because it is a v6. I say either go for the 40 50 or super 44 if you don't mind spending an extra 15 bucks.

I had my stock muffler and resonator cut out and replaced with a straight pipe and a Magnaflow muffler. Sounds great. Cost me $180 at a local muffler shop. Then I put on a K&N cold air intake and it sounds even better.

Flowmaster 40

I did the same thing, cut out the muf and res, put in a Flowaster 40 and extention pipe. $110.00 and 30 minutes. Not loud but has a deep sound with no annoying resonation. I like it and the price was great.

They cut the resonAtor off? I was told it was illegal so I was going to do it myself. Does anyone know if it even makes that much of a difference?

I removed my resonator only and kept the stock muffler to see if I wass happy with that.

I have a few videos of it on youtube.
here's one you should be able to get to the rest from this one...

I think I'm going to add a Flowmaster 50 series. Seems to sound perfect to me and not so loud like Magnaflow

I think that's a good choice. You will be happy with the 50 series Flowmaster!.. good luck!

Personally, I was torn between the 40 and 50. I chose the 40 because it was said to be louder and I didn't mind the drone everyone complained about. I also think you will enjoy the 50.

Its not illegal to cut off the resonator as long as your trac doesn't exceed the local noise ordinances. Just don't stomp on it when cops are near and you'll be alright. You may be thinking about the catalytic converters. It IS illegal to cut those off everywhere.
