Replace Those Torsion Bar Adjusters!!!

If you haven't yet checked the TSBs for your X, do so. I believe that i had my '96 swaybar links replaced Free-of-charge @ Ford due to a recall.

Could someone be more specific about the "clunk" they hear that was fixed by replacing these?

i seem to have a rubbing/grinding sound under compression of the suspension i first noticed when offroad (when really working the suspension) and now it happens every time i go over a big bump.

i can feel it in the floor, about where my heels are, so I was thinking that the torsion bar adjusters may be so badly worn that there is metal on metal rubbing ~ but it seems that my '99 doesn't have the kevlar patches

Anyone? Can the lower A Arm bushings cause something like this?

Hokie,

I'm not sure about the design of the 98+ T-bar adjusters, but the "cluck" you describe is pretty typical of worn kevlar on the 1995-1997 design.

As for lower a-arm busings, its totally possible, but i think you'd have many more problems, such as loose steering and constant clunking.

Thanks,

It isn't so much of a clunk as it is a rubbing/grinding sound.. its obviously either a dead bushing that is binding bad or metal on metal rubbing b/c i can feel vibrations in the floor when i go over speed bumps. I crawled under yesterday and started thinking A Arm bushing because I definately don't have kevlar patches on my adjusters

There have been reports of people's upper a-arm bushings going, and creating a squeak noise. I'm not sure about lowers. I had originally thought my lower's were going, and special ordered a new set of MOOGs. I removed the lower a-arm from the frame (by removing the t-bar adjuster, antisway bar, and shock) only to discover that the balljoint was the source of the clunk.

The lower a-arm bushings were about $20/side, but I ended up returning them. The new MOOG upper balljoints came with both the arms and their bushings.

Where do you buy the part

FPN has them for $26/ each. Couldn't find them on rockauto. My dealer "employee" cost is $21, so I am thinking that normal dealer cost is around $30 or so.

I'm having this torsion bar adjuster problem as well @ 80k. Do I need to order this part from a dealership or can I get it off the net? Not sure what FPN is. Someone please clarify where to buy this part. Thank you
