1998 Explorer
Hello everyone, I am new to the site. I have a question. I just got a 1998 Explorer (eddie bauer). I know it has a Mach system in it. However, my problem is the speaker in the trunk (cargo part) has blown out. I assumed I could just pop the panel unscrew screws and change the speaker. However this hasn't happend. I cannot get the old speaker out. It seems the speaker is bolted or something through the back. If so how do I get to it? I must admit I am a novist. If anyone could offer advice on how to get the speaker out, I will greatly appreciate it. Also, when replacing the old speaker, does it have to be a Mach speaker? Thank you for your time.

Depending on how technical you are, you have to remove the entire back panel around the window to get to the sub box. You have to carefully remove all of the plastic push pins around the window and the trim first, recline the seats, pull the back strip up by the back door on the floor, pull the carpet back and gently pull the trim away from the window. Next, unplug the sub and then remove the six bolts holding it in. Remove the box to get to the pesky bolt on the back that holds in the speaker. JL audio makes a 8" speaker that goes in there but keep in mind, any sub will work as long as it has a narrow depth. I have been through this and I know it's a lot to do but this is the only thing you can do to replace the sub. GOOD LUCK

ok, thanks for responding. I'm going to try.
