Replacing Multifunction Switch

ok, so I decided to tackle this a little more, and noticed that most of the connectors are completely pulled out.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram so I know which wires go into which port? Facing the steering wheel, the lower one still as the red cap on the backing, but the other one doesn't. Those are the ones I need to refit.

I'd appreciate it.

Is the part the same for all of these? I need to get a new switch since my wiper mist dosent work , well it will work once in a while. Also the hazard switch makes my left turn signal turn on by itself when i drive sometimes. so i had to stick a piece of paper in there to keep the button all the way down otherwise my left turn signal will be on all the time.

Also what is the cheapest place to order it online? I have a 1998 explorer sport which does not have headlight switch on the turn signal lever.

I had a problem with my 95's MFS and thought that upgrading to a "newer" 98's would be a benefit. NOT! Although the switches look the same, the 95 and 98 internal wiring is different. When installed, the wipersworked onstantly and went into high speed when a turn signal was operated.

I have had my brake light problem for about six months now and have literally exhausted every family member and friend I know of whose knowledge of automobiles is far greater than mine. My problem was the brake lights didn't work and all the other lights did, I recently changed out the multi function switch on my 01 sport trac and discovered a small piece of plastic lodged in between the switch and the wiring harness. Not sure is my problem is unique, but hope it can help someone.

Good stuff, i just replaced mine the hardest apart for me was unplugging those connectors.. partly because it was like -10 so everything was a little cold. Anyway a somewhat easy job. My symptoms were that the wiper sprayers would not work at random times and sometimes the left turn signal would go off by itself.

Thanks for all of the information that you guys post. I am assuming after reading about the turn signal problem that it is a multi-function switch now. I have experienced the "poof" of smoke from the steering wheel column..lol. My turn signals are out and I did test that blue lights,(under the driverside dash) and they are not working either. Do you have any idea how much a garage would charge to put this in? And can someone send me a direct link to the best and cheapest place to buy this. I looked at one site and I could not find it. I know I am asking a lot of you guys but hey...I don't have a husband!! lol. I can fix credit all day though..

It is fairly easy to change this out just need a few basic tools.

The multifunction switch on my ’99 has been infected with a poltergeist for quite some time; the wipers come on whenever it suits them.

This integrated multifunction switch controls the turn signals, hazard flasher, windshield wiper/washer control, headlamp dimmer/flash-to-pass.

I finally decided to replace the switch.

The switch, part number YL5Z13K359AAA, cost $66.48 at my local Ford dealership.

The first step is to disconnect the negative battery cable. Next, the 3 screws that hold the steering column shrouds on were removed and upper and lower steering column shrouds. This fully exposes the multifunction switch and its two Allen head screws which are then removed. The two electrical connectors are removed.

Installation is the reverse of the above procedure.

The total time involved in this project was about 20 minutes.

Alas, the poltergeist has been exorcised; all functions controlled by the multifunction switch have been restored to normal.

Do you know if the 96 Explorer Limited is the same easy replacement? Whenever I use the left turn signal a wisp of smoke arises from the top of the steering column. Needless to say, I am currently using hand signals.

I did the exact procedure on my 96.
Its as easy as described.

Hey just want to say thanks for pointing me in the right direction for the multi-function switch. I ordered it on eBay on 29 June and had it on 1 July. Installed it in about 40 minutes with only one minor problem. I broke one of the locks for the wiring plugs in the removal process. That will not affect the plug or the performance of the switch. The photos in this thread were very helpful.

The whole thing only cost me $30 plus $15 shipping. Well worth it. I have already given the seller positive feedback as well. All functions are now working again with no wisp of smoke. My key-in-the-ignition chimes are also working again - must be same circuitry.

Malfunctioning Ignition Switch

My 92 Explorer seat belt chime rings constantly and my key doesn't go into the switch straight. Also found the ground clip broken under the rim of the switch. However, trying to remove the switch has been challenging! I have the shrouds off the column and the plate open on the front of the column but can't get it released. Any suggestions? Or am I in the wrong place?

So, switched is now replaced but hazards still don't flash and turn signals only come on while hazard switch is engaged (pushed in). Any ideas?

sounds like there is nothing wrong with the switch. Hazards on is in the up position so then they are off the button is pushed in.
Turn signals will only work with hazards off, so you're good there.
Check the fuses for the hazards as I doubt there is anything wrong with the switch.

There might be a relay under the hood separate from the fuses? Cant say for sure, but check the owners manual.

I don't think so... I have tilt.. and replaced my switch twice.. never had any installation problems.
