Thanks for looking in -- I'm thinking of replacing a differential due to extreme noise and it's also beginning to stutter on occasion. Thinking of taking chances w/ a salvage unit - I've read some posts that describe this as difficult but -- is it? Seems like it should bolt right back in - granted taking hubs and halfshafts off etc. Thanks for any advice and/or links

Replacing Differential!!

:exp:IF you are planning to do this yourself to save money then you better have 1. The Shop Manuals.2.The Proper Seal Kit and Parts.3The proper tools and also the Proper Torque Wrench and Settings.4.And also the Patience and Time to do it properly. Work Safely. Good Luck.

My brotherinlaw is an mechanic. He said I should have it done by a shop that specializes in that type of work.

I don't see the big deal.
Go to the JY, find one to match, pay the guy that hangs around pullin' parts for a living to back yours up to the donor and drive away when he's done swappin yours out. Or drive away with one and do it at home. Don't forget to bleed the brakes!

Seriously. Call some yards and see if they'll let a guy do an install. Haggle.

Thanks for the advice -- I changed fluid w/synthetic 75w/140 and put two bottles of friction modifier, trans X, and she's whining like normal now!! As you know, just about everyone of them whines some just as long as they aren't screaming - keep riding! Thanks again.
