I am the original owner of my 99 Explorer. I brought it in for a state inspection this morning, and I was told I need brake pads and rotors on all 4 corners. I'm not really surprised since the rotors are original and the pads were put on about 4 years ago. Anyway he said the job would be about $690. So I said I'll do the job and bring it in next week.
Now my question: Looking at AutoZone and Advanced Auto website, what are the best pads and rotors to get? There seem to be so many some with 2 year warranties, some with limited lifetime warranties. Pads that are semi-metallic and pads that are ceramic.
I do not want to go cheap but then again this is a 10 year old truck, I don't have to get top-shelf stuff. On the average it looks like each rotor is about $50 and the pads are about $40-50/set, so it looks like I would have to spend at least $300 just for parts. Any inputs?

A lot of people on here go with powerslot rotors and hawk brake pads and love them. You will get a much better deal on www.rockauto.com then you will from any parts stores. There slotted/drilled rotors start at around 50 right in your price range. I like semi metallic pads.

Just so you know, the Power Slot rotors will run $100 a piece or more.

I was facing the same dilema not too long ago. I just bought the autozone brand rotors for 25 a piece then put on the middle of the line pads also from autozone. So far they have lasted 35k miles and still look new.

Well I stopped by Autozone and picked up the following:

Front rotors: Duralast 2yr warranty: $52.99 ea
Rear rotors: Valucraft 1 yr warranty $ 32.99 ea
Front pads: Duralast Gold Ceramic pads: $59.99 set
Rear pads: Duralast Gold pads: $36.99 set

Total including tax: $292

If I looked hard online, I could have found a little cheaper, but I wanted to get it done during this long weekend. I already did the fronts this morning, I'll do the rears tomorrow.
Thanks for everyones input.
