do i dicconnect the positive or the negative or both? Do i just disconnect it then connect it right back up or do i have to wait a while? Do i just start up my X after and let it idle for a while?
Right. disconnect it for at least 15 min and then connect it back.
But, does it make any difference if I disconnect positive or negative? There shouldn't be any difference which cable to disconnect.
When you connect up the battery after resetting the computer how important is it to follow the directions in the manual? Would a 20-30 minute drive in general traffic conditions suffice or must you follow each stage rigidly as described?
probably not because there is most likely some component sending the check engine signal. Reseting may make it go away for a day or so but my guess is that it will come back
