I am looking at getting a 4th gen explorer. i have a 2nd gen right now. i recently looked at one that was previously a campus security vehicle for a college. it had a rather interesting feature installed in it. with the vehicle running, in park, you could move the key to the off position and remove the key from the ignition and the vehicle would stay running until the brake pedal was pressed, and then the engine would shut off. so you could remove the key and get out and go do stuff and leave the vehicle running. but if anyone tried to get in and steal it, as soon as they pressed the brake to put it in gear, the engine would shut off. you also have to step on the brake in order to start the engine. i really like that this vehicle had this and had intended to buy it, but it appears that someone else has purchased it from that dealer. so in my search for a different one, im looking into what it would take to install this type of system. but i cant find any info on a system like this. wondering if anyone here has heard of it or could guess how they hooked it up.

Thats pretty awesome. I need to install something like that in mine.

I installed a after market alarm system that had that feature. The feature was called pit stop mode.

I know most of the nice remote start/security systems have this. Called valet mode sometimes. Viper remote starts have it for sure, I think its pretty common.

Also, not sure if this is common knowledge or not but you can leave your truck running with the key in and doors locked if you take the remote with you and lock the doors with the remote. I do it all the time.

I have my ignition key on a separate key ring than my remote and I keep them connected with a karabiner.

The drivers door will not stay locked by hitting a door lock button in the car only so you cant get locked out, using the remote to lock the doors lets it know you have access to get back in!

You can also lock your doors and then open the drivers door, if you press the manual lock you can close the door with the keys in the ignition not having it automatically unlock. I do this in the winter all the time, then I just use the keypad to get back in. Beats pulling the remote off every time.

Idk, works quite well for me. I usually want my other keys with me if I get out anyways. I have my house keys on one ring along with my cards for different stores, truck accessories/trailer keys on another ring, and the ignition key on its own ring. I often leave the truck running with the AC on for the dogs while we go into the grocery store or something like that. Or leave the heat on in the winter.

Karabiner keeps them all together and can clip onto my backpack, plus it has a bottle opener on it ;)

Everyone has their own system!
