rock sliders??

does anyone know where i can get some good rock sliders for my 95 has anyone tried to use the sliders from a cherokee that have the double nerf bar that cure up around the rockers they would fit it they are long enough i havnt measured a cherokee thanks jeff

I made a set for my truck also before truckhaven, http://www.explorer4x4.com/thaven_roadkill.jpg , though not as visible as the close up.

We made them from steel square tubing, 1.5 x 3, 1/8 thk wall.

1- cut to length, wheel well to wheel well.
2- drilled and tapped on the back (1/4-20)
3- bolted from behind through the sheet metal lip that always gets munched on rocks. I used about 10 bolts on each rail.
4- Could use washers, or I used a same length 1/2 x 1/8 thk bar on the other side of the lip, sandwiching the lip when drilled to match the tapped holes in the bars.

I went to Big Bear this weekend, and the black diamond trail gave them a workout. Lots of scratches on the bottom of the bars, but I didn't get any more dings on the rocker panels to fix (again!)

I spent about $65 at the metal supply for material, and some bolts and drills, it went pretty easy. Strong enough to jack the truck up from under.

Hope you don't mind if I use your design! Is the 1/8" steel holding up well? Would you recommend 1/4", or is that a waste of $$?

I think it has a lot to do with what type of wheeling you plan to do. If you're going to Ribicon, I highly recommend the 1/4 thk tubing. I don't go on black diamonds often, but I do hammer down on those bars once in a while, and the 1/8 hasn't suffered anything more than scratches on the bottom corners. I can use them to lift the truck, since the are spreading the load over the whole length of the rocker panel. Double the wall thickness is also double the weight.

wts. for 3 x 2 tubing

Wt/ft for 1/4 = 7.11lbs

I believe the bars were around 70", so the wt would be:
1/8 - 22.8lbs per side 45.6 total
1/4 - 41.5lbs per side 83.02 total

The advantage also to the thinner wall would be if there was a traumatic blow to the bar, the thinner bar would give or crush, and reduce the shock to the rest of the truck, like a crumple zone on a car!. You can always replace the bars.

(Note: Some folks mount to the frame also, but there is some flexing between the frame and the body while wheeling, so I chose to just mount to the rocker panel lip.)

I did almost the same to my truck only I used 3/16" box tubing 2"x4" and 2"x2" 3/16" angle iron on the inside of the body lip. Works very well
