Rod Knock?

Oil leak could be valve covers, but the majority of it is probably the rear main, another thing the 4.0 is notorious for.

i got a 01 xlt sohc with 145k..bought it to swap the engine but when brought it home realized MAYBE i can find the broblem..its got a pretty loud clatter and knocks faster and harder with higher rpms. engine is slammed with sludge! sounds like its comeing from the left side..is it worth looking into or should i just go ahead with buying a lower milage engine and swapping.

no smoke or leaks nor any sort of engine lacks..runs fine..just serious loud clatter.

help would be really appreciated..i need this quick..thanks

You are in the wrong place this is for 91-94

dude at that price, with a new trans and its in decent condition he's pracically giving it away.. jump on it!!!

as for rod knock.. can you tell if it does it every revolution of the engine, or every other revolution? or post a video (i can tell by listening) this would help greatly (for instance, cam, exhaust leak, lifter noise, or other such things happen every other revolution, where as a rod knock would happen every revolution, thus twice as "fast" as say, an exhaust leak or lifter tick would sound)

if it's a lifter tick, i wouldn't worry about it.. a ticky lifter isn't really a big deal IMO.

if it IS a rod knock, a set of new bearings would probably take care of it.. if not that, turned crank and undersized bearings. IMO those 4.0's are great engines, really solid bottom end and they last a long time (except for the head crack if overheated issue on some years) but the heads were improved by 94 i think.

Just got email notification today on this - suprised to see I was the original poster! This was back in 2008. Guess maybe I didn't follow up.

I bought the Explorer in question for $400. Rod knock pretty bad and getting worse but I drove it home. Took the K&N filter, alloy wheels, floor mats, rear air deflector, and front bugflector off for my blue X and sold the knocking Explorer to a kid for $400. His Explorer's trans had gone out but, since this one was nicer than his, he bought it to put his motor into. He drove it away.

EDIT: Markoloma, sounds like a knock... symptoms of my knocker X were oil smoke from the tailpipe, smoke coming through the heater vents, engine overheated at stoplights unless heater was on full blast, and the knock got gradually worse within a short time (10 miles). A rod knock can tear things up in a hurry so if you have one and address it quick with a rebuild, okay, otherwise a used low mile SOHC shouldn't cost too much at a junkyard.
