OK I just installed a new rebuilt A4LD my problem is when you put in in PARK it will sill roll just like being in N. Any ideas ? I have manually shifted it into PARK so I know it really is in PARK. PLEASE tell me this transmission is not going to have to come back out.

There's a parking pawl inside the trans in the tail end. It locks the output shaft from turning when you put it in park. I bought a used A4LD before that had that pawl broken off. Not saying your is, but it's a possibility.

Is it in the Tail Shaft?

This is on a 4WD. Does the transfer case do anything?

No t-case shouldnt be related cauz if it is, then the vehicle shouldnt move when put into [D]rive. Only the AWD transfer cases "creep" when the transfer case is faulty (or a missing front driveshaft), but the AWD transfer case was not available for the 1st generation Explorer (91-94) so this doesnt apply in this situation.

I 2nd the parking pawl theory. Mine does the same thing, and I'm convinced it's that. There was a recall done on parking pawls, and it describes the problem exactly. I also talked with a guy who's been a mechanic at the local Ford dealer, and he said it was very common. He'd done a lot of them himself.

I found this recall for my '91 Exp.

Here's a link to Ford's recall site where you can punch in your VIN number to see if it qualifies for that (or any other recall, for that matter). Mine wasn't covered, bummer, but yours might be.

I'm trying to figure out exactly where the pawl is and if I can do it myself
