Hi all,

This is my first post.... own an '02 Explorer....was wandering if anyone here would help me out with a little problem.... the side bars of the roof rack have begun to peel due to mildew... my question is what kind of paint I should use if i were to do it my self...and what kind of preparation would need to be made before painting? OR if it would just be better to take it to the dealer or a body shop...TIA for help

I repainted the roof racks on my truck which is a 98. If your roof racks are made out of aluminum clean all of the old paint off... ALL of it. Make sure the metal is nicely scuffed up and then prime it with 2 or 3 coats. Lightly sand the primer and then spray 2 to 3 coats of flat black spray paint on it. I just used the brand Dupli Color and its made for bumpers and other flat black moldings. It has a picture of an 01 Explorer Sport on the front, you cant miss it.

Paint doesn't like to stick to aluminum too well so you have to use primer. The Dupli Color didnt want to stick to the old paint at all so it just bubbled up and I ended up doing it twice.
