Sooooo....I have been fixing up this old explorer. Started with a K&N Filter, Ford racing throttle body and swiss cheese mod on the air box.

After putting the Screamin Demon Coil pack, plug wires, and new plugs in, everything ran great. Much smoother. This past Weekend I put Gibson headers and exhaust on. Everything is great in town, but on the interstate I get hesitation and stumble at high speeds. While I am in the process of building my own Cold Air Intake based on a 90mm Lightning MAF I have spoken with someone local about a tune after all is done and installed. I guess my question is am I risking doing any damage as-is? It runs rough at times at high speeds and its an older engine and car. Any input is appreciated.

Reset the computer by disconnecting the battery. I hit the brake pedal for 30 second to remove any residual voltage and then reconnect the battery.

There is no need for an engine tune, though a high octane tune would gain you a few horses. The transmission shift points and shift pressure can be tuned. But for the mods you have made, the computer can self tune............................If you have not done so, reset it and see if she smooths -out.

If he goes to a 90mm maf which is pointless,he'll need a tune

Double check your plug gaps and fuel filter

Agreed

I would also check my installation to see if I messed anything up when installing the exhaust. Oxygen sensors in good shape? Check for codes?

Update: Solved. Had a vacuum leak where the egr went back into to intake manifold. Hopefully this will help someone else in the future.
