Hello all,

I've got an '03 Explorer with a V8. I've recently had a rebuilt tranny installed(95k). Ever since then, the truck "shakes" at 900-1000rpm. It's not a violent shaking, but more of a "roughness". I also feel a "fluttering" when accelerating. It's like there's a slight "clogged" feeling or "poor respiration", for lack of a better description. It happens whether in park or in gear. I've just had the sparks replaced, a new Harmonic Balancer(it was "wobbly"), full cleaning of throttle body, inspection of vacuum hoses, filters, etc...I'm chasing a ghost here, and I can't get this thing licked. Any thoughts? Could the installation of the tranny messed something up?

Any thoughts, direction would be greatly appreciated.

best,

-tom

Since your problem wasn't there prior to the tranny rebuild installation, I would say "it is possible" your problem could be from the tranny rebuild. The tranny shop may have missed something regarding the balancing of the "torque converter or flywheel". These components need to be in proper balance since they spin during operation. If one or more of the balancing weights is missing or off in weight, it could cause a wobble effect to take place as the engine runs and make you think you have a rough idle condition. I have a similar situation in my EX after a rebuilt tranny install 2 years ago. A slight wobble in the truck, noticeable at idle in park that wasn't there prior to the tranny installation and never have gotten a CEL code. The RPM's do not drop at all during the wobble either. I've had the truck checked out by 2 different repair shops for this wobble, diagnostics done, everything, and both concluded the problem must be an off balance condition in either the torque converter or flywheel. They both said the engine runs fine and can't find any problems in it. I also changed plugs, wires, fuel filter,K&N air filter, Ford fuel injection cleaning, belt etc. You may want to ask the tranny shop manager about the torque converter or flywheel balancing and see what he says. BTW, if you do get a CEL code, then your problem may be engine related.

as a note, the shop that rebuilt it was aamco, they admittedly messed up the torque converter the first time and had just installed a new one a few months before i bought the truck
