My 98 explorer has recently been hunting slightly at startup until she eventually sits at about 600rpm. This has only started happening last few weeks.

i dont know if its related, but now when i start her up i have a yellow warning icon to the left of the battery guage that stays illuminated!

can someone point me in the right direction? i have checked my manual and can find no mention of this icon (looks a bit like a gearbox shape?)

any help on the above 2 faults would be much appreciated as i am out of work at mo and cant afford to put her in the garage.............

many thanks
marty

The light is the 'Check Engine' indicator. This means that the computer has stored an error code in the memory. I would guess that you have a lower intake manifold air leak and that this is causing a weak mix which is why the light is on. The cure is to fit the OOM12 kit which replaces all the inlet manifold seals and upgrades the front timing chain tensioner. This post shows you what is involved. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=487634&postcount=33

mines got the same problem
the fault code reads lean mix on both left and right hand manifolds
i have contacted my local ford dealer about the OOM12 kit ,he looked puzzled and said we never dealt with the explorer and said he could not supply one...
does anybody know where to get one from from?
thanks in advance
and a merry christmas to all
