I wanna preface this by stating, yes I know she will need a timing chain job sooner or later, this is not to prevent that at all.. Rather to try and prolong the life of the components and to quiet down my rig, which if it sits a few days gets a little loud until its all warmed up and driven..
I decieded today to give it a shot and get a 5 qt bottle of Royal Purple 5w30 and see what happened... Given the 9000000000 opinions on motor oils, I knew this was a $40 experiment.
I took the truck down to my local shop (don't laugh, its a Kia Dealer... there more honest, cheaper and have better mechanics than either ford dealer) and while brian drained my oil, we got talking about what I was doing. He suggested I try about 1/5 of a bottle of Lucus Oil Stabilizer (again, 900000 opinons..) as he has a car with timing chain rattle (suzuki's, nissans and a few others have had this issue as they used plastic parts)and it helped alot when used in small doses ... So we refilled the explorer with roughly 4.6 quarts of RP and .3 of Lucas (i'd never dump the whole damn bottle in there) as he stated
OMG... OMFG! Its quite! There is still a little rattle, but it def. is quite. And smoother... And has a ton of power. I've never felt a 4.0 SOCH go this strong. EVER (well in an explorer).... It really has helped... I've only driven 20 miles or so, so only time will tell...
But I am thus far impressed. Starts right up and lubes those chains up quick. Thats what matters to me.. Keeping the chains lubed and helping it not start so hard after its sat... I know Royal Purple is expensive and some call it and the Lucus snake oil. I can't tell ya yet weather thats true or not.. But so far, Im stoked
