Anybody know if I can use Royal Purple Max ATF in my 93 stock Explorer. I'm having problems shifting out of first when cold. Shifts fine after hot. I already checked the vacuum modulator and vacuum lines. Probably a gummed up governor. Any help would be appreciated.

Likely the governor. I wouldn't expect expensive trans fluid to fix anything. Remove governor, clean it up, install a lower mileage one if you can find one. Install a Sonnax governor weight. New fluid and new filter. Mine stopped gumming up after a few fluid changes and a heavier governor weight.

Thank you, is this a do it yourself job? I know you have to remove the transfer case and the drive shaft.

Yes, it's not very hard. You will have to bench press the transfer case, about 75 pounds I think. You can remove three of the t-case mounting bolts from underneath and two from the access panel in the floor (pull back carpet). Once the case is off you can easily access the governor. Do a forum search for more info on governor removal. Transmission Parts USA is where I bought my Sonnax governor weight, it was cheap.

I have a brand new from the dealership governor I need to sell, PM me if you're interested.

Don't waste your money of the RP ATF.

It is very expensive. What kind of atf would you recommend? I want to go synthetic I think. I also want to start using synthetic oil but I have a small leak from the main seal and I heard it may get worse with synthetic.
