1998 Ford Explorer sport
I have a 1998 explorer sport v6 ohv and ive been reading around and hearing people talk about 3500 rpm's and stuff but when im driving in order for me to even get close to 3500 i have to really floor it and even than probably never reach it even driving at high speeds its around 2500 and cruising its usually around 2000 i just want to check to see if that's normal or should i be getting more out of my car.

so if you floor it from take off and hold the peadal to the floor untill it shifts you still cant hit 3500rpm ?

well i dont floor it a lot but im pretty sure, im trying to remember from the last time i did, that it got close to or just 200 past 3500rpm's. I'm not complaining i think that lower rpm's give better mileage, correct me if im wrong, just wondering if its something that could hurt me years down the road.

one thing to add that when i have it in park or neutral it will go all the way to red line

im not familiar with a 98 but if your flooring it and holding it down and the most your getting is 3700rpm id say somethings wrong. i asked the same question here once and everyone said they shift at around 5000rpm. i just had my tranny rebuilt and i shift at 4500rpm. you can try searching thing plus im sure someone with more tranny knowledge will jump in here.

sounds wierd... when i floored mine, it wouldnt shift until 4800... and according to the tach, it would redline at about 5200....

when my truck ran on the freeway, it would be at 3500 at a cruise of 75-80 mph.......

granted I have the 5.0, but I can get the truck to shift at 6k (end of tach) which I believe is where the tach limiter is set at also
with o/d on, goin 70, it's right around at 2500rpms.

ok just an update on the problem. Today i floored it to see what it does and it went up to 3800 but than cruising at 50mph the rpm's go to 1500. I bought this car rebuilt from a crash could there be any way that the gears have been changed and that's why this is causing it?

i cant really help with your question, but even according to Ford once a day you should run it past 3500rpms from a stop. Helps eliminate carbon buildup.

Sometime, from a dead stop. Push the pedal till it won't go no more, then push it a little more. Hold it there until it shifts. It should shift a little after 5k rpms. If not, search for the Throttle Cable Mod on here.

If you have a 3.27 gear ratio, <30" tires, and no chip, it's difficult to reach 3500 rpm, even flooring it on takeoff.

I thought the OHV shifted at 5200RPM, Thats where mine shifts. And I have no mods, totaly stock.

The highest I have gotten my to shift at is 4500 with no chip and a tighter throttel cable

I wouldnt trust my tranny at anything over 3k, but im sure it would go over 3800 rpms. I too think something is wrong.

yeah mine shifts about 3900 and the only mods i have are exhaust and K&N cone filter. All i was really expecting to hear was not to worry about it its not a big problem "if its not broke don't fix it" but if anyone can say it is i guess i have to have it looked at.
