RPM's and gas mileage?

so what do u guys think the problem is...its an 01

Could this have something to do with his torque converter? Im not sure, but could it not be releasing? Or whatever they're meant to do :)

I have a 97 Sport with 16 inch wheels and mine is exactly 3000 RPMs at 80 MPH
 






Let me see what my RPM is @ 80mph tomorrow. I know its less than 2500.
