Just got a 98 Explorer Sport on the road Saturday. It sat around for 2 months, plus. I do not believe that the previous owner really used the 4x4. So today I excersised it. Just on the street, for a short ride. When ever I first hit the gas, the truck moved but it shook. Once I was over about 10 mph, it would go away. After a bit, it began to stop shacking as much.

Could this just be from the 4x4 not being used enough? I used it once before (in the snow and on my street at slow speeds) and it never did that.

you shouldn't be using the 4x4 on dry pavement. it puts too much strain on the system, because the wheels don't slip.

Yes, I understand that but once and a while you are suppose to excersise it so the parts do not rust off. These should be on very short trips.

It isn't as bad if its being driven straight, but its horrible on the 4X4 if you turn on dry pavement even rain wet pavement. I don't however know about the symptoms thats been described.

Hehe - the 4wd isnt going to rust off -- everything is spinning whether you like it or not (because the CVs are splined directly to the wheel bearing assembly) and as long as theres fluid in the transfer case, it wont rust or explode.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. The axle is a "live" axle its the same as if you had an axle with lockouts and kept them locked everything in the diff is moving and pushing the t-case drive shaft but doesn't much effect the t-case since the 4wd is activated by a clutch in the t-case and so there for you don't have a shift motor that controls you going into 4high the t-case shift motor only controls it going into 4low.

Just to clarify slightly the shift motor only controls high or low, don't preface it with 4... I do have 2 low

Yeah, I meant you don't have a shift motor that controls you from going from 2wd to 4hi just 4hi to 4low.
