Is there anything that I personally can do to cover this up? I do not care if it matches the color of the X. I have sanded it off once long ago but now it is worse. I do not want to take it to a shop to be repainted unless absolutely necessary.

This is at the bottom inside of the tail gate. I was thinking of masking it off and using the rubberized under coating on it...

Ooh, seams are bad spots for rust. Places like that on doors and hatches, from my experiences, usually are rusted more than it seems. Often when theres 2 peices of metal pressed like that and its rusted, both sides tend to rust and I've never been successful in clearing it without just getting a new door. Good luck

Thanks,
I bought some rust preventative. I will sand most of it down, and apply this stuff. It is black but I don't care. If it works well, I will then paint over it the color of my X.

IMO this turned out pretty good. I applied about 4-5 coats of this preventative. It feels kind of like a latex glove. I hope it works and will keep updated.

that will slow it down.

Removal of the metal is the only thing that will stop it.

The only thing that I remember from a graduate class in Corrosion:

You can never stop rust. Its thermodynamically impossible, because iron oxide (rust) has a lower free energy (is more stable) than steel (or any processed iron material). You can only slow it down. :p

If you keep your truck in humidity controlled conditions, and don't expose it to any electrolytes (i.e. salt) you might be able to keep it for a few hundred years, but in Buffalo NY it will become a pile of rust in less than twenty. :p

That was what I was afraid of. Here in the winter they pour tons of salt down.

I will see how this works, and if/when it comes back I will think about replacing the metal.

Should have used POR-15 instead?

Yes I know...

Next time

POR-15 only slows it down
