I just replaced the battery in my 05 explorer (not the first time) and the car only starts in safe mode and runs at rough idle. Disconnected , waited a half hour and same result when reconnected. Local repair shop says this should work but it doesn't,t. Does my memory have to be re flashed by a dealer or something? Any help would be appreciated

You have the electronic throttle body, if you've never cleaned it, or it's been some time, it's possible that the computer can't overcome the sludge that's built up. Prior to removing the battery, it had learned to, you erased this memory.

$10 and 20 minutes to perform this task. Worth a shot at least. Need a can of Throttle Body cleaner and a new gasket.

Actually, this tends to only be on the V8, if you have the V6, I've not heard of this being an issue.

#4 , you're a smart guy. My car didn't go into safe mode, but it did get a rough idle when I replaced the battery on my V-8 Mountaineer. Unfortunately, it was before I found this site, so I had to bring it to my mechanic for the fix ($$$).

I replaced the battery and alternator (2 separate times) and I had the rough idle on wife's '04 4.0 both times. It also threw service codes regarding the throttle body. I cleared the codes and restarted and the rough idle cleared up.

These Explorers don't like having a weak battery or having it disconnected for any amount of time.
