Saleen or Cobra wheels?

Yeti,

Was the guy that was going to sell you the wheels from the 619?

There was a guy from San Diego at the sidewalk sale that bought tons of explorer parts to re-sell. I have his address somewhere......

Yeah, Rick's from San Diego (Chula Vista actually) I talked to him last night and he had sent his last set of XP8 wheels to be chromed. (No, I don't know why) I ordered my Cobra R's this morning from GEF Racing and I'll find out on Monday how long it'll take them to get to San Diego.

I'm sort of bummed because the Saleen wheels would be different and I've got a few other Saleen things on my X. No big though, the Cobras look awesome enough!!

yetix,i found out that the wheels that are made by speedline are the magnesium alloy type that were dicontinued by saleen a few years ago. the ones i bought are made by kmc , idon't know if that makes a difference?

Dunno. The guy didn't say anything about Magnesium vs. Aluminum wheels to me. I'd call Saleen and ask 'em.

Oops, gotta go wash the X before I get outta here!

yeti, no saleens?! fill us in (or at least me.) cobra r's are gonna look badass anyway, and GEF racing is great to deal with, thats who i got my cobra r's from when i had them.

The guy's number has changed a few times over the last couple weeks. By the time I finally got ahold of him he'd sent his last set of wheels to be chromed (they were gold and noone would buy em). No offense intended to anyone, but chrome wheels aren't my style. I'm all about subtle. (Yeah, a lowered X with Cobras and a Borla pipe is REAL subtle, lol!!)

Anyways, he tried to find more Saleen's but couldn't. So I'm getting the Cobras which will look badass and be 1/2" wider to boot.

Now I'm trying to decide between Scorpions or the new Michelin Cross Terrain SUV's. I'll probably go with the Scorps as I (cough-cough) might need to cruise at 80-85 on the highway!!

well, that sucks (about the saleens), but the cobra r's are still gonna look awesome. as far as tires, i would go with the pirellis if you can - theyre usually a little more $$, but theyre well worth it. only a few more weeks till i get my new rims and i can finally put my scorpion zeroes back on my truck :) i cant wait.

speedO

what does it take to get the speedO calibrated when you get new tires and wheels that are a different size. what is done? where is it done? what does it cost?

Dunno. The outside diameter of my new tires is the same as the stock wheels thus no changes to gearing or speedo. Sorry,

on a 98 you need to have it done professionally. on the earlier ones you just change a gear thing. you could get it done at the dealership or at a speedo shop. probably around 100 dollars.

speedO

my tire size now is 235/75/R15. if i put on a set of 255/65/R16 will that require me to get a calibration?

i believe the diameter of the 235/75/15s is roughly equal to that of a 255/60/16 so you will be alittle off with the 65 tires. it shouldn't be enough that you can't cope with it without calibration. just watch out if the cops find out. also your truck will be putting on miles slower!
i'm not sure about the tire sizes though, try a search on tire diameter or something, i remember seeing a calculator somewhere.

Did that 2000 bumper fit well on your 96? I am looking to get a new bumper and an airdam from explorer express. I just ordered the X-spec Suspension....and suspension bumpers and what not....but i got the edelbrock shocks for 15 bucks cheaper a peice somewhere else...was it pretty hard to do all that painting...i love the way your front end looks. How did you remove the pinstripe?

Thanks for the compliments. I dig the way it looks too!:D

I'm learning the hard way about painting over chrome. I didn't sand the corners on the bumper first before I sprayed them with etching primer and now I have a few spots where rocks hit it that the paint's coming off. I'm going to have to take them off, strip them down to the chrome again, sand them, then paint them again. Not a huge deal and it is so worth it.

Installing the 2000 bumper was very very easy. The old one simply unbolts and the new one bolts right up. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me. It was also very easy to install the EE airdam.

If you have not gotten the bumper yet I'd suggest checking out Bumpers.com . They have them for very cheap and they have all the parts, etc. I had to do a lot of junkyard surfing for mine and now wish I had just plunked down the cash.

The pin stripes were the easiest part. I just started peeling at a corner and peeled them rigt off. I then went over it with polish and wax and you cannot even tell they were ever there.

Next I'm taking off the other side thingys to make it look realy clean.

You should take off the roof rack. That will make it look good too.

I use them to haul skis, bikes, etc. so I'm gonna be keeping them.

98FordX24, on your 235/75/R15's you diameter is 28.87, on the new 255/65/R16 your diameter is 28.04, so that means if you are travelling at 60 mph with your new tires you will be actually going 58.2 mph.

BTW, I currently have Cobra R's on my Explorer and I just picked up a set of Saleen 18x8.5 rims, I might install them on my Explorer... still thinking about it. I don' t know if anyone has noticed but the weight limit on the Cobra R is 620KG (1366 LBS) each, on the Saleen 18x8.5 the weight limit is 1500 LBS each. That's something to think about. Also, if anyone is thinking about upgrading brakes on the Explorer, you are better off with the Cobra R's. Brembo's and the SSBC's will fit on the Cobra R's.

Just my $0.02

Goodluck!

Willie, just make sure you have the 18 x 8.5 wheels that were designed for Explorers. The Mustang wheels look identical but are made differently and will crack if you use them on an X. Look earlier in this post if you're not sure which ones you have.

I'd really like you to elaborate on this subject. A separate thread indicated that to use Cobra R brakes and rotors, you have to purchase a bracket from Saleen; a bracket they do not advertise as being available.

I'm not sure how different your Ex is from my '96 4D XLT 2WD with ABS, but if you know info specific to my vehicle, I would appreciate any insight.

Thanks,

Rick
