I know the majority of people doing SAS's use the Wild Horses coils. Anyone ever thought of using XJ (Cherokee) lift coils? I was thinking the Cherokee is close in weight to an Explorer/Ranger. The only issues are the way they are mounted but like everything else, that can be overcome. Another issue is figuring out how much they compress at vehicle ride height. Rubicon Express has 5.5 XJ coils so those would be the ones i'd try. What do you guys think?

Why?:D

How much do the XJ lift coils run? And with the solid frame, the X may weigh quite a bit more than the Cherokee. I should go look in the driveway and look at the difference.;)

With the aftermarket for early bronco coils you can pick and choose just about any coil you want.

What about using custom coils, or some from a coil company like Eibach?

Variable rate would be a good option too.

I believe there are some that use the Cherokee spings for the conversion, if it's a Gen I Explorer?ranger and you want to retain the stock bucket then a coil for the Ford will fit best.

Robb, I was just looking at pics of Cherokees in some of my mags and it looks like they flexed very well.
I figure no matter what i'll have to change the buckets to fit whatever coils i'll be using other than what was intended for a stock Ranger bucket...just looking at other options;) The Rubicon Express coils are $150 a pr.
so that seems to be in keeping with EB coils.

Jaime, I've heard good things about Eibach coils and i'm sure you get what you pay for with them but with Wild Horses offering variable rate coils thats probably the best bet. Maybe I should just go coilovers...hmmm:D

David- I am using rubicon express 5.5 XJ coils on mine in conjunction with a warn black diamond kit for a YJ wrangler. I think it is all up to the owner of the explorer and what parts he has access to. :)

Dont forget Funds!

So HVAC, How is the off road performance with those coils? Did you fab your own coil bucket for the top or how did you go about mounting it?

Josh is running XJ coils with an XJ axle on his CoryL built SAS. I think it would all depend on the axle a person wants to use. Personally, I would go with the EB setup for both axle and springs because the frame on the Explorer/Ranger is wider than a Cherokee.

I'm using James Duff coils, and they work very well on stock Explorer buckets.
