I saw in one thread that you could use a solid front axle from a mid eighties jeep cherokee. Is this true and if so what years? The salvage yard has lots of those with five lug solid fronts for $56 complete.

All mid eighties (actually '76-their demise) full size Chrokee's had 6 lug axles.

Even if you could get an axle for $56, you'd still have a lot more money, time, and trial and error before it was right. A SAS is very involved, and labor intensive. It's highly possible, but there is a lot to it.

Ok, First off, I am talking about around an 86 mid-size cherokee. The junk yard has lots of 86-91's. They have a solid front with a 5 lug pattern.(that is what I got my wheels from) Second, I know the cost will grow with the build. I just want to know if these are a good axle to use in way of strength and if parts are readily available to rebuild the axle. I have a 91 that I am going to change to a sold front with leafs. If this axle will work, I can have the same pattern on the front and back without adapters and will not have to mess with the back except for the SOA.

The '84+ Cherokee (non-Grand) is called a Jeep XJ. The front is a HP D30 (reverse cut), coil sprung, 5x4.5 bolt pattern.

It is the same axle that JoshC, NOTAJP, hvac man (I think), and Yomie (and others) used in their swaps.

Thanks Robb:cool: I will go grab one as soon as the snow melts and start getting parts for the build
