I am in the process of putting a 74 bronco dana 44 in my explorer.I used the brakes and outers off an 1979 f150 dana44 to do the disk brakes.I have a couple of questions.
1 how can i convert the 5 on 5.5 front to 5 on 4.5?I have two new sets of wheels and would really like to keep them.
2 I would really like to keep my abs is there anyway to fit this set up to the front axle?
I know alot of people will say change your rear 8.8 axles to 5on 5.5 but i really don't want too.And to disable the abs,but i don't want to do that either and i thought someone here might have some ideals.thanks in advance.Keith

I don't think you can keep your ABS. For the bolt pattern, just buy some wheel spacers that adapt from 5 on 5.5 to 4.5. Just make sure you don't get the cheapo's because I've heard some bad things about em.

You arent going to be able to go down a size to the 4.5" lug pattern get the spacers for the rear to change them to the 5 on 5.5". I got mine from M.O.R.E(www.mountainoffraod.com) and have been very happy with them.

You cant keep your ABS with the old Bronco 44 as far as I know

To convert the front to 5 on 4.5 you have to get the knuckles out off of a mid 70s dodge pickup. They came 5 on 4.5 However you cant have any locking hubs with them and from my understanding they have a pretty crappy wheel bearing setup and like to eat them up when used with bigger tires. You can't use spacers on the front as the dana 44 locking hub is to big to fit inside a 5 on 4.5 wheel pattern and rim. Other wise get new shafts or wheel spacers for the rear and buy new rims.

You might beable to get ABS to work by using some parts of the 90s broncos if they had front wheel ABS but that would be aton of work and I am not even sure if broncos had front wheel ABS and if it would even work

dont use adapters. thats a ghey idea and adapters are a dumb idea (no offense^^^).

as far as the abs for the front axle, i dont THINK it can be done but im not 100 percent on the ttb suspension setups. you wouldnt on a SLA setup for sure, but that doesnt help you any...

I read that the D35 TTB uses the same knuckles as the D44. Are the streight axle knuckles the same as the TTB knuckles? I'm pretty sure I know the answer but want to verify.

I know you cant bolt a 35 spindle on a 44 knuckle. A TTB 44 knuckle uses 6 bolts to holed the spindle on where the 35 uses 5 bolts.

You really, really dont want to change the front to 5 on 4.5. One of the great things about going with 5 on 5.5 is getting REAL hubs and decent wheelbearings with beefier spindles. The 5 on 4.5 D44 stuff is weak and ghey. Dont spend money going to weaker parts just to keep from buying new wheels. Sell your wheels and buy some just like them and you'll come out about the same price as buying the lame 5 on 4.5 stuff.

Just IMHO. :)

Im in the process of building my d44 as well, from a 73 bronco. Everything ive heard so far sound like the righy way to go about things, keep the 5.5 pattern and change the rear. What im going to do is get duchman, (or some other custom axle company) to make me a set of shafts for the 8.8 that are 5 on 5.5, and then just redrill the drum. Easiers and SAFEST way to go about things. I just dont know if I would trust wheel adaptors with my life.
