SASers....steering box ?

Damn Josh that sucks, i hope thoes were grade 8 bolts, but i'm kinda scared to hear that the grade 8 bolts sheared

Are you going to put any steel on the frame?

Here is a shot of how mine is done.....My welds may not be pretty, but the are really deep and strong...I used a single piece for the upper bracket instead of welding 2 plates together.

Do you know what kind of welder cory was using...what are you using? i used a 220 stick with 1/8 6011

I would gring the sleevees flush with the frame (leave then in there) without removing too much weld. THen place the steel on the outside off the frame lining up the holes and weld the sleeve. It would be easier for you to do it this way now, since the inside is offset a bit.

If i get a chance, after seeing what happened to you, i am going to try to get apiece of steel on the outside of my frame also.

Is that winch permanently mounted to that trailer?

Yeah, Cory had that big 220v Miller Mig welder. I've found a couple of welds that weren't deep at all, i've had to go over a few. I'm using a Hobart 135 (i think). I'm not worried about my welds, i know they'll hold. Your box is back 1.5-2" then mine, i'm guessing your plate is on the back side, can you get me a picture of that Reg?

Yeah just leave the sleeves in the frame and drill your holes the same size as the bolt and then weld it on :)

I moved my box back cause i didn't want the bolts too close to thoes big holes already in the frame, here is an inside shot of the box mount, i tried a few times and i can't get a shot showing the plate, the plate is about 2.5" x 7" or so(its not square its shaped like a L), only big enough to cover the 2 holes that go through the frame, i wish i would have made it bigger, that why i have plans to do something with the outside of the frame.

That's what i was wanting to hear. Should i do both sides, or just the back side of toward the box?

Yeah i can't tell much from that picture. I've got the idea, just wanted to see it.

What did you do with yours Dave? What about Jefe and the other 2nd gens? Anyone have any more pictures?

If you have the box out, go ahead and do both sides, it may be a bit hard for the inside, but drill holes large enough so the sleeves stick out of it. Weld the plate to the frame and then weld the sleves to the plate(does that make any sence) that is for the inside (box side)

The box is in for now, i had to work on it while it was on the trailer, so i had to put it back on to get it off. It's not hard to take off, so i'll have to when i get to welding. Actually i'm not going weld that more then likly, i'll probably let a friend at work do it since he's a pro.

But yeah i know what you're talking about.

Cool, let us know how everything comes out!

Here is my setup:

All three bolts are sleeved. I did not add any plate, except where my coil-over hoop hits the rear one (you can see the starts of that in the first pic) I did rip the weld on the inside of the frame on the front bolt and that then bent the frame on the outside, back before the D44 went in. It was just a bad weld. I rewelded it, and I've wheeled it hard quite a few times since with no problems. <knock on wood>

I ripped the same weld/bolt you did Jefe. I do like your mount for the top bolt, is that something you made?

I hope you luck is better then mine and you don't break anymore. I'm going to get started on mine maybe this week, but i'm in no huge hurry since i'm driving my brothers Explorer for the time being. This is going to be a chore.

Should i plate both sides or just one?

. . .

Yes, I made that. I didn't like the way Cory's looked. LOL
Its those two triagles, plus a vertical piece directly under the tube for lateral support.

If you're going through the trouble of one side, I'd go ahead and do both. You definitly need it on the outside for that front bolt, since the hole in the frame is there.

Yeah i didn't like Cory's design either. He used those little speed gussets, as he called them, on everything. They're okay for somethings, but not for others. That's why i used 1/4" on my new mount. I Think it will be okay. I might add another piece on the other side of the bolt he so there is no flex on that piece at all.

I'd rather do the outside if i had the option, but i don't want to do a half a$$ job. The inside is going to be a pain since the frame looks like it takes a dive towards the outside right in the middle of my mounts. Ain't going to be fun!
