I would have added this to old threads gone by, but they got locked into the old "general" threads in the great forum reorganization of 2005.

I searched and searched for the "optimal" spot to deal with Seafoam on my new (to me) Eddie Bauer with 5.0L V8. I've read all the brake booster discussions back and forth, but have never seen a better alternative. I decided to try removing the intake system and use "Deep Creep" and just spray it into the TB. There is a little hole in the TB plate and with the "little red straw" that comes with the Deep Creep, it sucked into the TB no problems. I got rid of a lot of the can while also giving the TB plate a good spray. Very little smoke noted.

I then decided to bite the bullet and do a can of regular Seafoam through the BB line. I used a small funnel and poured it in fairly quick. The engine surged and slowed, but still idled just fine. all things considered. Once I got to the bottom of the can I quickly shut off the engine and waited 15 minutes. I started up the engine and went for a drive. I live on a busy street and there were lots of people out enjoying the warm winter day. They must have thought I was pure trailer trash as I drove way with the massive cloud of smoke behind me. It lasted for about 5 minutes and eventually dissipated when I hit the freeway. I drove to the local "Auto Village" to get a few more cans (nice to have in reserve). This time I dropped by my office (about 5 minutes from home) and decided to try another can through the BB. My thinking was that the car had never been Seafoamed so I'd try one more just to clean out what may have been missed with the first can.

Before I even got the can poured, there was so much smoke that I was convinced someone would call the fire department or police. This time I waited about 5 minutes and started her up again. Big cloud behind me, but it dissipated much quicker this time.

End result is a very smooth idle and quiet for that matter. I also did the throttle position sensor mod recently (.96 v almost bang on) and have cleaned the MAF and IAC since I got the Eddie just over a month ago. Combined with my custom intake (Modified Volant from my SOHC), the new exhaust and tuning from Doug at Bama, the new Explorer is running VERY smooth.

I think I'll stick with the BB method to getting Seafoam in the engine. I think I'll do it in my work parking lot from now on (pretty sleepy place on weekends) to avoid all the nasty stares as I smoke out my neighbours. :D

I did a half can just like you did. Helped for a while. I think I'm going to grab another and do the whole can. I did put the other half through the fuel tank. May want to consider that as well.

I did a full can through the tank when I got the Eddie. From here on in, I'll probably do a 1/2 can through the BB and remainder through the tank each time I Seafoam.
 






Ok, this is going to be a silly question. What is a BB line????
 






That would be the vacuum line to the brake booster.

However, the optimal line to use is the PCV hose. The PCV was designed to spread evenly to all cylinders (so as not to dilute 1 cyl a/f charge with crankcase gases more than others). The brake booster inlet was not designed with this in mind. Very little flow takes place in that line and the sea-foam will get some cylinders more than others and on some vehicles, none. If you look at it with the intake removed, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Yes, I know the can says brake booster line. But before you stop there, just think about it.

Where is the PCV hose? I'll try it next time. Pics would be helpful.

I've heard to anti-BB argument for a LONG time, but it sure seemed to work for me. I'm open for this other method if I knew where to look.
 






On yours the PCV valve is located at the rear of the drivers side valve cover.

It's labled on the underhood emissions sticker.
 






Just did a search re: PCV valve/hose on the 5.0 and it sounds like a real ***** to deal with. Thanks for the reply nonetheless.

Take a look under the hood, that's the best place for a search. It's labled on the sticker and the hose is easily removed.

I'm just basing my comments on the many threads on the changing of the PCV valve in the 5.0 and seems to be a pain to change. I'm assuming you're saying the vacuum hose is easier? I hope so. I'm a terrible mechanic and don't have a lot of patience. :D

I can eventually figure stuff out, but I tend to keep the major, time consuming tasks to several mechanics I use (depending on the job). Seafoam on my SOHC was dead easy (I went through the IAC tube, piece of cake) and the BB method on the 5.0 couldn't be any simpler. I do plan to investigate the PCV method nonetheless. I've surprised myself on what I've been able to accomplish under the hood since I found this site.
