Just bought my wife a '17 explorer xlt with the very common drivers side seat heater not working. My only question is, if the cushion element goes bad, does it effect the upper back section? I'm gonna replace the lower portion but wasn't sure if that's gonna fix the back element as well. Thanks for any info from someone that has replaced the cushion element

Welcome to this forum! According to what I've read recently, it sounds like these seats use a duct to transfer heat & cool air from the lower section to the upper section with a fan instead of using a separate heating element. I'm not sure which year this applies to.

Two different styles of climate controlled seats, some are cooled and heated and those have fans but the newer Fords have fans plus elements. If your switch only has a heat function then yes it's almost always the seat bottom element that goes bad and the back rest portion will be in good condition. The hearing wires flex a bit when you sit on the cushion and with time one will end up breaking causing the open circuit that shuts down the heater.
