My driver side seat is getting sacked out. I am considering a new one, but I do not have a lot to spend. I did a few internet searches, but I could use some suggestions. I don't want racing seat or big luxury van seats - that is mostly what aftermarket offers from what I have seen.

Is it reasonable to switch front passenger and driver, since passenger seat is less worn? I know that the lever will be on the console side.

What have others done?

Does anyone have used for sale?

Thanks, Rob

Try calling a few slavage yards in your area, you might be able to find an OEM seat for not a ton of $$$$.

Good Luck!

In the junkyard search, rmemeber any Exploerer seat can be switched from 1992-2001....

Some people have done the front L-R seat swap, and changed the trim on the seats to reflect that....

Thank you both,
Maybe I can get some cool upgraded seats! Mine are just basic. I will check around this weekend.

I saw in the buy/sell section of this site that there are some, but they are a few hundred each. That seems a little high.

Do you have leather or cloth? Mine started getting saggy too, so I took the seat out of the truck, took the lower cover off. It's very easy, you just have to pull down on the "clip's" on all four sides. (If you look under your rear seat to see how the cover attaches you'll get the idea).

I then took an old set of the "egg crate" padding that I had from my bed and cut a few squares from it and layered it. It was like having a new seat again.

The only problem that I had was getting the air hoses to fit back on the switches for the lumbar and bolster.

It's a cheaper alternative to getting a new seat if the seat is otherwise good.

A dumb question

Did Ford offer the leather seats in red? My driver seat is also a little wore as far as the padding under neath. New leather would be nice.

That is a good idea, Dave. I imagine that your BED is not as comfortable now!:D

I have cloth seats, would that be different? I should take it off to see if I can boost it with new foam, or at least see what is going on with it. It seems like the wires and/or springs are cutting into the seat foam because there are foam crumbs that appear underneith. I have heard others on this board say they have the same.

My explorer has a lot of miles, which is a lot of sitting, so considering that my seat is not in bad shape. Long trips I really notice.

I imagine that your BED is not as comfortable now!:D

I bought a new one for the bed and used the old one to repad the seat. I just layered it on top of what was there. I a rip in the thigh bolster too, that I had been putting off. I sewed a patch onto that as well. (I have a cloth interior)

It worked out nice. At first it felt a little weird because it was like having new seat padding, but it settled nicely. My butt no longer gets sore or falls asleep on the long trips anymore.

Not all of the seat frames are the same, though, if you are planning on replacing the frame and the seat. I recently tried to put in power leather seats in my 91, and i found out that the rear 2 bolts on the floorborard lined up fine with the ones on the seat frame, but the front 2 were not even close. The front right was off by an inch or so, and the front left one was off by like 3 inches. I ended up just puting the power seats on the non-power frames and i now have seats with a bunch of useless switches and a lever to move the seat back and forth.
