My buddy drop something under the seat and when he reached down there to pick it up he found that the track was hot to the touch. Any ideas what could be causing this? Car is a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer AWD 5.0

Possibly it was just hot outside, or sitting idling for an extended period of time, and heat conducted through the floor pan? Otherwise unless you have heated seats, there's nothing else down there besides the seat motors, but if one had seized (or kept trying to run at the end of the seat track travel due to a switch failing into a closed circuit position) then it should have blown a fuse.

Do the seat adjustments work, the buttons make it move in all directions it's supposed to?
