I rented an RV for the last week. It is based on the econoline 350 with the V10. We forgot to put the gas cap on yesterday and now the Service Engine Soon light is on. The manual that came with the RV says it will go off after a few cold starts followed by a mix of city/highway driving. I've got to return it tomorrow and I don't want the idiot light on when I do. Is there a way to make this go off now! How about if I disconnect the battery for an hour or so? Please help!!

You should be avle to turn it off with an OBD scanner.

OBD scanner, battery, or tell them the truth

Al, if he happened to have a $250 scanner sitting around, I don't think he would be hear asking.

I would try pulling the battery off for awhile to see if that does it. And you are right, it should cut off with enough starts, but I am not sure how many it takes. I am pretty sure Robert knows all about what you have to do to reset it. You can try searching or maybe send him a PM on exactly how to do it.

Good Luck!

It's not that I'm embarrassed that I left the cap off. I just don't want them freakin' out and blaming me for everything that might be wrong with the RV.

So the battery thing should work? Since I don't have a scanner.

Zensius, I think the light turns off with about 70 start cycles. I would disconnect the battery first and see if that clears it. If not, then you can turn the key on and off until the light goes off.

Well, disconnecting the battery worked. Yeah. A lot better than turning the thing on and off 70 times! Thanks for all the help guys!

Well I was going to say that the battery will work, but you already know that. Also, it would have turned off after two drive cycles with at least 8 hours in between. Actaully there are a lot of different conditions that must be met, but usually just two drive cycles with enough time for the IAT to drop below 80°F in between is sufficient.
