I have a 1992 Ford Explorer XL 4x4. When it sets for awhile on cold days and the engine cools completely down when I go to start it......it starts and runs really ruff and shaked until the temperature gauge gets up then it runs smooth. It has never done this before until latley.......has anyone else had this problem? and how did you fix it? Thanks.

I would definitely try re-tightening the intake manifold bolts. It could be when the engine is cold there is enough of a gap to cause a vacuum leak and when it warms up, the gap closes.

Ok..so I just tighten the bolts holding the intake manifold on? This is where the tube coming from my KKM runs into isn't it(manifold)? Thanks.

You definitely need a Haynes manual for this job. It shows exactly where the lower intake manifold bolts are and what the torque specs are.

Mine just started doing this too :(

cold start

hey mine does that too. mine is a 1999 sport and on cold days it shakes and tries to stall too. after about two minutes it will quit doing that. I took it to ford and they could not find anything wrong with it. but I am taking it tomarrow. let you know what happens.

'99 Sport? When you take it back, bring up recall 00M12... cam tensioner and o-rings on intake manifold... it's probably your o-rings if it hasn't been done yet... and even if it has, my dealer says they dont always do both. Could be a myriad of other things, but be sure you ask about 00M12 because that is a common cause of a SOHC's cold starting problems.

cold start

hey thanks for the reply, but I am new with explorers and what does the number mean.

Here is a link that is probably your problem.

Dead Link Removed

00M12 is a Owner Notification Program that Ford has going. If you are under 7 years and 70K have Ford do this and it will fix it.

Good Luck,
mikeh

Is 00M12 free of charge?

I got sick of my 92 doing that so i bought a nice 93 and sold the 92 to a moron.

As long as you are still under the 72K I believe.

Just go over to the dealer and tell them that you want them to check if this is the problem. I did that when my 98 started shaking... dealer fixed it free of charge.... you got to tell them that you know about the recall.... some might try to pull a fast one and charge you for something...
00M12

Thanks for the information. Do I have to take it back to a Ford dealership, because I bought it from a Chrysler dealership.

whatever you do form the moment you left Chrysler stealership you do at the Ford facility.
Just call your local Ford Service at authorized dealership and set-up an appointment....
