Has anyone done this? and does anyone know how to go about doing this? I am going for a custom look and think this would be a great addition. Any help is greatly appreciated.

They are not worth the pain. I have several friends that have gone with the shaved handle look on their sport trucks, and every one of them has had problems at one time or another. The remotes fail, battery fails, relays fail, popper motor busts the cable, etc.... Now if you want a different look why not try installing handles off another vehicle, something that compliments the body of your Explorer.

Hmmm... chrome handles would be fun! but.. on my 94 I just put new oem handles on. it made the car look brand new...just a thought...

I wasn't thinking about shaving them all the wat off just down enough so they are flush with the body. This way you don't need a remote to open the doors. I have also heard of stories of alot of people who have problems with that.

Every now and then.. you get a hairy handle... the must be shaved!!!!

Thanks for that in-depth report on the world of hair door handles, Flyguy :)

You welcome. Tell a friend!

What are shaved door handles?

This is when you remove the door handles, weld metal over the hole, and refinish it so the door is smooth with no handle at all. Then you install a remote door popping system that opens your door with a keychain clicker.

You can "shave" almost any thing:
  • door handles
  • tail lights
  • etc...
