hey i was wondering if anyone had any info concerning shift kits, if so did you notice a very big difference. i have a 98 sport and it already seems to shift pretty hard. i redline at 6000 and when it shifts it only gets down to about 5250. can they do any damage to your car? i appreciate your help.

You talking about an electronic one or an internal one?

I actually have both. Both improved the shifting greatly and the electronic one is switchable which is nice. They won't really change your shift RPMs, but they change the firmness and speed of the shift. As for making it shift too firmly, don't think that's possible on our trannies.

I too have been reading the threads on the b & M shift kit, and i'm still a little confused...I'd like my truck to downshift a little faster. I have the 5-speed auto and when you step on it, you can feel the first downshift a little, but the second one, which takes you to about 5000rmp's takes forever....now is this a shift point thing, or simply that it takes a long time to shift?????

Alec, you have the 4R55 tranny, right? Doe sthe B&M work on the 5R55 also or is that a completely different program? If not, do you know if there is one?

As I understand it the electronic BM works on both the 4R55 and the 5R55.

Thanks.

thanks for the info, one more ? though. what is the differences between the internal and the electronic ones as far as performance and price go. also, about how much do they cost? thanks again

The internal ones run $50-100 I believe. But of course installation is more difficult and may require a pro. The electronic one is $30-40 and can be installed in about 30 minutes.

Performance-wise, the internal one is more consistant and more beneficial for the tranny, but the electronic one is good if you don't want to dig into the tranny.

I had some tranny work done. The B&M shift improvement kit , Motorsport valve body and bands, and superchip which increased the tranny line pressure, they also swapped a stall speed out of mustang aod trans in.

the difference -

It not only drives like a more confident truck, but the performance has totally changed. It's much more responsive, the downshift is there as soon as i punch it. The shift firmness is nice and hard. I can really feel ever gear lock in and pull. Performance off the line is at least half a second faster now that i can launch it out at 3600 theres no waiting for the power its right there. so over i say tranmission mods are a very substantial part in building and explorer , the stock tranny setup is mushy.

how much do you think it would cost to have a guy/shop install the internal one?

Hey guyt's just heard of the shift kit! Is it really worth doing and which one to buy it seems B&M have a few different ones so which one will suit a 98 SOHC 4.0L 4x4 Explorer
i was wanting to install it when i change my tranny fluid and filter next month!
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

I was thinking of buying the B&M shift improver kit as well. Is it that difficult to install? Also, I was looking at the details about its settings. Which would be best on the explorer, the RV Package or the High Performance (something like that)? Any thoughts on this kit would be great, Thanks.

Lastly, what is the name of my transmission? (94 XLT, 4WD)

hey guys i just bought a B&M shift plus electronic kit how do i install it? what wires and where? what is the best place to put the switch???
i should get it in a few weeks.
Thanks

It will come with all the necessary instructions. Basically you tap into 2 or three wires of the computer harness and run the wires inside.

Name of my tranny....94 Xplo XLT?
Thanks

where do you think the best place to put the B&M switch is???

Mine:
Dead Link Removed

When mounting be aware that the resistor box gets very hot. The wiring has 2 boxes close to the end: the switch and the actual box that does the work. That one should be mounted so that it is "floating" and gets the max airflow possible.

ok i just installed it the shift plus that is and it works i'll give you that! Thanks for your help guy's.

Alec is it possible to have that switch turned on all the time? Or is that bad for the transmission?
