So my '96 Explorer's (XLT AWD V8) shifter cable is definitely stretched out (symptoms started as no start issues, turns out the car didn't think it was in park). I tried readjusting the tension using the adjustment down on the transmission side and I made sure that all was well with shifter assembly itself. Now if I need to replace it - is it something I can do myself? how much is the part(s) and where can I get it? and how much do you think a garage would charge for it?

I am in a similar situation. Only I believe my cable has completely broke at this point...

Any help??

Sorry man, can't help you. I sold my 96 explorer and got a 98 mounty before I tackled the problem. Maybe somebody else can help you out.
