2002 Explorer XLT
I have a 2002 Explorer XLT and when I am in drive and try to put it in park the shifter has to stop in reverse for a second then go to park.
I did a search but couldnt find any info on this.
What could this be, it seems like something is binding. If the car is turned off in neutral or drive the shifter will NEVER go to park. I have to start it, stop in reverse then go to park.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Took my wifes 03 explorer to the dealership for this same issue couple years ago, turns out it wasnt covered under the extended warranty(glad we got the extended warranty) and they said that it is a faulty valve or solenoid in the transmission, dont remember which one as it has been a couple years ago. Talked to a mechanic and he said that it doesnt hurt anything, just an annoyance.
Good luck!

thanks, I figured it doesnt hurt anything. I put about 80,000 miles on it since it has started doing it..... I am just seeing if I could fix it myself, but if it is internal I guess I will just wait til I need a new trans...
