I think it's time for some new shocks on the explorer. Does anybody have any good tips for new shocks (types, etc)? Is the install fairly easy? I'd like to attempt myself.
Check this one out, after reading it i'm pretty confident I can do mine. Bought mine yesterday and should be here by monday so will be tackling this install on tuesday. I bought some ranchos 500 cus ive read good things on here. This will be my first major install but this thread is detailed. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=223149
check out rancho shocks. they are doing a promo right now and you can score a 50 dollar rebate. i actually replaced mine, and got a set of four rancho RS5000 shocks for 159.00 shipped to my door, after the rebate i got a brand new set of shocks for 110 bucks!
go to 4wheelonline.com and see if they are running the promotion. a lot of members run these shocks including myself. they arent billsteins, but they are the best deal dollar for dollar in my opinion. my truck sees a lot of highway driving, and a lot of mild to moderate off road use and the ranchos handle business.
as for the install, the only shock that is a pain to replace is the rear left, but its not complicated, its just a pain to get loose. pm me if you decide to do it yourself, id be glad to help.
I went with Monroe Sensatrac all the way around, including the "5th shock" between the rear axle and pass side frame on 4-doors. I have been very happy with them. Installation was pretty easy, as I have a "Southern" truck so rust is not an issue, plus access to air tools and a lift. It pays to drop the spare tire to ease access to the top bolts in the rear. Good luck.
I also just installed the Monroe sensa-trac load adjusting shocks. Bit of a pain to squeeze that spring together but it took the sag out of my Explorers rear.
Kyb gas adjust are a mono tube gas shock. They are similiar to Bilstein but a cheaper price. Monroe's are not. I bought my KYB's all the way around for about $165 at RockAuto. That is more expensive than Monroe. I have used both and I like the KYB's.
