i changed the tranny fluid last year , should i also tighten the bands since i feel the tranny never had service , there is some delay during shifts, feels like some slippage under hard acceleration

I would not do that mate- was it slipping b4 you changed the fluid?
Did you do a complete change or only wahat was in the pan?
I hear that it is often best to flush the old out fully- maybe its best to give it another go- there is a post some place here on a complete flush and fill with pics.

There is a lot more oil than you now hiding in oilways unseen!

as far as i know you cant actually do a complete flush because of the torque convertor. there is more oil in there though than just pulling the pan. actually with the mileage and you say you can feel it starting to slip, might want to look into getting a rebuild while its not tore up bad. these trans take downhill turns fast.

I am shocked that you made it to 170k with out a rebuild. I would not spend a whole lot on anything short of a rebuild.

yes i know it should be rebuilt , the slipping is well feels like only at WOT but otherwize when putting tranny in drive u can hear the servos moving into place like a squeek but otherwize theres a delay when putting into drive or reverse and kinda slow shifting while driving , the old fluid was dark but not that bad and there was fillings on the magnet l, very little sludge in pan , i was gonna adjust the bands maybe i thought over time they stretch , what do u think thx ; ) theres 172 on clock was also concerned with motor ( 4.0 ) of how long that will last , the truck is in VGC

i hate to tell you with metal in the pan and the delay going into drive the trans is right on the edge of going. as for the engine depends on your maintenance if it still runs fairly strong your proli alright. but i know with my luck ill rebuild the trans and th engine or something else will go. good thing dad has been a mechanic for 40 years specializing in auto trans:)

yea i figures that , when i bought it i didnt plan to have kept it this long also the rear end is going also that needs a rebuild ( ford whine ) i may just trade it in get what i can for it while its still running, i did rebuild the AOD in a 92 explorer wasnt hard at all

No guarantees on anything with the mileage you have but the motor has a solid reputation. I would bet it has been taken care of pretty well for the transmission to make it to 170k. I paid $1500 to get my tranny rebuilt recently. It went out at 132k.
