Should I get the originals or new?

Hi guys,

I am new to the forum and have a 2004 XLS Sport 4 x 4 Explorer. It has it's original Michelin P235/70R 16 tires on it. I have 80,000 miles on the vehicle and I live in OH so I drive in the snow and ice for a few months. I also tow my boat (around 1800Lbs) about (30) times a year. I am looking for some really good tires becuase I am keeping this Explorer for a long time. The other factor is that I replaced (1) of the tires about (2) years ago because it had a blowout. I am being told that I need to buy (4) new tires because of the four wheel drive and potential transmission issues. Would you guys just buy the original tires again or something different? What would you buy and why? Any information or ideas would be appreciated.

Right now I have pricing on these (3) units:

Michelin LTX M/S
Cooper (ATR) OWL 104T
Goodyear SRA OWL

I would buy a complete set, but it is not necessary. I believe that the new tires on the rear. The diameter of the tires must be the same. The LTX are a very popular tire for SUVs and everybody that I know that has used them loves them. That is what I will put on my 05 when I need a new set. I would also insist on a LT rather than a P tire, due to the increased load capacity.

Tires are like dogs, "mine is better, bigger and meaner than yours". Ultimately is depends on what you plan to use the vehicle, price and availability. If you search on this site you will find plenty of opinions on tire for explorers.

I understand 4 new on 4x4 is the standard for newer models...

Check out Bridgestone Duelers or Toyo A/Ts. I hear nothing but love for those tires.
