Should I listen to my muffler guy?

I'm running a KKM Filter, and thought a new exhaust might be a nice match. Does it make sense for me to do this?

I had a flow 70 series on my 96 OHV and it was a great sound when stepping on the gas but was quiet at cruising.
On the present V8 I just removed the resonator and added dual tailpipes and am equally pleased with the sound.
Flowmasters tend to DROAN at speed. Not sure what your looking for as far as sound but if you dont want to hear the DROAN at cruising speed, go with the 70 series.

Hi, I have a 04 xlt 4.0 and i have a flow 40, after the 3 cats, I like the sound not too loud and not too quiet, Like a Honda with a trash can muffler, LOL.
To me, loud is my 71 Nova with 350 sb and a transverse flowmaster 40 dumped behind the rear wheels.

Also my 40 is quiet except around 2000 rpm, but not soo loud i cant hear the radio or emergancy vehicals.

Dunno if anyone is still looking at this thread, but does it matter what outlet you get? I have choices like going in the middle and out the same, middle and left, etc. I think it's just for fitting underneath, just want to be sure.

Bill, was your 96 OHV a 6 or 8 cylinder? I just talked to muffler guy who said the 70 would be too much muffler for my engine (95 6cyl OHV) he suggested the 50suv. I really don't want drone at speed though. Any suggestions?

I mentioned earlier that I had put a 40 series with dumps on my 4.6L Explorer. It was very loud, and droned on the highway. I just had a 70 series put on and it is perfect. Smooth and sounds close to stock, but has a more throaty flowmaster sound when you step on the gas and DOES NOT drone. With the windows down, you get to hear the V8 and with them up, it quiets down. I recommend the 70 series to anyone wanted to enhance their exhaust sound without it being to loud or annoying.

Thanks, I was just worried about the "too much muffler" warning from flowmaster. Don't want to bog down with no back pressure. Didn't think choosing a muffler would take this much consideration! ;P

Bill what size pipes did you have coming off the cat on your 96. I'm prob going to go with the 70 but am having trouble on deciding whether a catback with 2.5 pipes is necessary.

Nevermind just installed the 70 series on a 95 6cyl ohv. Aldive and Bill were right, nice sound and tone, but mellows out at cruising. I definitely recommend one.

outlet doesnt matter at all... they pllace them differently to fit ur vehicle application... for an 02+ explorer, do offset inlet and center outlet

I think I might go for the generic Flowmaster 40 that he has in stock. He said that he puts them on a lot of cars, and they sound the same. I can save a little by going this route, but he would cut me a good deal on the Flowmaster 40 anyway. So I'm not sure. He said that if I didn't like the generic one, he'd cut it off and put the Flowmaster on no problem.

The only thing I'm not sure of is the name brand of the generic muffler. Does it matter?

Also, he originally told me my 02 had 4 cats on it, but then he looked again and said it had two. Makes me wonder just how smart this guy is if he looked at it once and said four, then looked again and said two? HA!!

im fairly sure its just 2 or possibly 3 cuz ive been down under the car before... there is one for each header with an oxygen sensor in each and they join together to one bigger cat...

a flowmaster 40 and 40 delta are essentially the same thing so there wont be too major of a decible difference to the human ear... the major difference is between 40 and 50... 50 has more baffles so its a tad quieter at idle.. idk wut hte "generic" muffler is so i cant help u there... any more questions and im here though
