I am contemplating rebuilding my motor and trans or should I just buy a new one that has already been remained? And how much do you think it will cost to do it in so cal and how long?

Any help will be appreciated.

It depends, How much do you drive the vehicle? How long do you plan to keep it. A decent used (100,000) motor can be had for around $400. With a little luck you can get 50,000 miles or more out of the old motor.

Remanufactured motor $1,800 to $3000. You have to shop around. Reman is best for performance and longevity, but look at the cost. If you intend to keep an explorer reman is not a bad idea, because you can always swap it into another vehicle.

Transmission is a whole nother issue, I am a manual trans guy, so I wont comment here.

Oh wow. I didn't expect it to be that much. Well I really wanna keep my explorer drop a new drivetrain in but I don't have that much money. And my car has like 166,000 and my trans is starting to go out. It shifts late. And when its cold it hesitates to go into reverse. But I think I'm gonna buy a 87 ranger ex cab with a 6" fabtech lift. And it only has 70,000 miles on the rebuilt motor. And I'm getting it for only $700 so I'm pretty stoaked.

an a4ld rebuild will run from $1200-$2500 (I've never personally seen one go for $1200.. both times for us were $1800-$2000) (we paid for rebuild + install)

Yikes. Dang I didn't expect to spend that much. would I be better of buying a drivetrain out of another explorer with less miles and just putting it in mine. I plan on keeping my car for along time its just I look at the pros and cons. And I don't wanna spend money on something and then I wanna sell it and lose a lot of money.
