I just bought a 1992 4x4 with 150,000 miles on it and about 80,000 on a rebuilt tranny. When I hit about 65 mph I get a pretty good shudder or vibration. It happends in drive or overdrive.

I just had the tires rotated and balanced. I also just had the tranny fluid flushed.

Any ideas? Is this a tranny problem or could it be something else?

it is probably just a standard vibration..... explorers are TRUCKS that were not designed to go very fast....

Could be an alignment problem or a worn suspension member too. You might want to check the ball joints and the radius arm bushings to make sure they aren't worn.

I don't know Jim, 65 is a bit low for that kind of thing. I usually get a little bit around 75-80 and even then it's only a little bit.

I'd say it's just worn radius arm bushings. There are tons of posts here about them.

Woo-Hoo! Somebody else from Kansas!

That makes like 3 of us now. We should start up a club or something. :)

I had the same problem on mine when I bought it. About everything was wrong with it. It needed to be aligned and the Radius Arm Bushings are still worn to this day. But an anlignment was the cure. The tires were either pointed in or pointed out (if you're looking at the truck from the top). That also caused the tires to start "cupping". It was also starting to get flat spots on the tires because they would basicly have to "skip" on the pavement and the front tires would fight each other for the direction of the vechile. I had to take my Explorer to two different alignment shops. The first one had nothing but idiots working there and after I got my truck back it pulled to the left worse then when I took it in there. Finaly I found a really good shop and it's been fine every since. As far as I'm concerned it's perfect. I've had the truck up to about 95 or so and it's just as smooth as when it's at 30.

Here's Kansas #4!

I have heard that worn U-joints can cause vibration.
