I have a problem with shuttering in the front end (maybe rear end). It only happens every so often when I turn and is not an everyday thing. When it does happen my O/D light flashes, but I can turn the X off and let it sit for a while and when its started back up the light is no longer flashing. I have 186K on it. I am changing out rear diff fluid shortly to RP or Amsoil ( not sure which one yet, still doing some research) and possibly going to be doing the front diff as well. Any suggestions on what this may be will be greatly appreciated? Thanks for the help guys

i too am having this problem.. any help would be great!

what engine you guys all have?
do you AWD (no switches) or 4WD (Switches)?
Whats the Axle codes (on the door sticker D4 or 45)?

couple of things it could be the rear clutch packs or Viscous or wheel bearings.

jr....I have the 4.6L 4wd...Axle code is D4....Feels like it is coming from the front though...maybe cuz its vibrating throughout is why i feel it up front...

Just be sure there isn't a problem with the wheel bearings, common and do weird things.

Check the front driveline components, front pinion bearing, half shafts etc for any abnormal play.

BUT with a d4 code that makes it a limited slip rear diff and it has clutch plates.
Some have had luck with a drain and fill, and they also have to add the Ford Additive. . .fixed a few.

Other than that there is a TSB for what you describe that involves rebuilding the thing. If you have access to a hoist one trick (extreme caution and safety bla bla bla) see if you can reproduce it on the hoist. . .4wd set to manual, that might tell you something. If the its there then its somewhere in the driveline, if it disappears rear diff would be my guess.

Noise and vib have a tendency to travel especially with the solid frame.

Im looking at changing out the rear diff fluid and replacing it with either amsoil or rp. Im hoping this will help and take care of problem. Thanks for your help jr

just replaced my front and rear with the recomended 75w-140,had jiffy lube do it( didnt have time to do it myself) not sure if they put friction modirater in it though. will let you know if it stoped mine.

That would be great. I would like to know if it helps. Is there anyway you can find out what fluid they used? My father in law had a similar noise to what I have and he just had one of his hub/bearing assymblies replaced and it seemed to have had the noise stop. Its been a few days so we will see if it comes back.

Yah, They used Redline with friction modifier, and it looks like it didnt fix the prob:(. It looks like Ill check the bearings next. If not, i got a trip to cali in april, will see if it grenades. Then Ill pick up a new aftermarket axle for 800$ and try that.

Keep informed of how things go. Hope it works out
