Signs of failure of a speed sensor

When the OSS sensor ( on the tranny) is failing does it it fail all together or does it act erratically before it stops working? And does odometer stop working also?
What does the speed sensor on the differential control?
My speedo stopped working but odometer still works. Just wondering if it could be some other issues.

The dash cluster on Gen I's also fails. I just replaced mine. The battery gauge went. Then the speedometer and tachometer. Then the odometer.
