- 1991 ranger
good afternoon all. I need help! I am sure you all could help me in a moment so here goes. I have a 1991 A4LD transmission (F17A, KB, A449760 on a sticker) which I need to place into my 1993 Ford Ranger, that is, if it is reasonable to do so.
This transmission was in my other ranger (which is no longer with us). the way it died was to make a small leap while starting out in 1st. It seemed to be "okay" so I went forward. After 30 yards it then threw a fit while, what I thought at the time, was in 1st or 2nd. I have taken off the tranny and opened it up. The gears inside all seem to turn fine w/ no obvious damage except with two larger gears having small, consistent "flea bite marks" all the way around. All other gears seem to even have their factory tooling marks in place.
I note that with the top cover off when I place the shift stick back into place (on the cover) and perform the shilfting pattern 3rd and 4th (middle rod) shift smoothly, the (what I presume to be spring loaded) "button" gives and OD and Reverse shift smoothly. But, it seems to me that the button which lets the shift stick move free of the rod which moves the 3rd and 4th speed gears will not depress sufficiently and allow it to move intp position to shift 1st and 2nd. People, am I on to something? do those things wear out? does this sound like what may have been the original problem? can I replace it? Finally, does it sound reasonable that I could fix this and put it into my 1993 ranger w/o further repair? I am, after all, inexperienced and this would be wonderful!!! Thank you, I await the experts- please comment, Dave
