I have noticed on my new to me 2000 exp sohc 4.0 180,000 miles that when it gets nasty temperature wise that on cold (overnight under 30 degrees F) startups it makes a brief timing chain noise for maybe a second or so when it does it's starting rpm flare thing. I'm assuming the noise is while the tensioner gets pumped up with oil? My question is it possible to easily rig a switch to kill the spark or fuel briefly so the engine can crank for a few seconds before it fires off so it can build oil pressure and not rev to 2000 rpms on a dry start?

I have no idea about letting it crank.

I do know that mine does rev up higher than normal for a short time when cold, but only in warmer weather.

Now that the temps are consistently below freezing, and sometimes below zero, I get a light rattle/grind on cold starts. I have been trying to convince myself that it is the starter grinding on the flywheel, but I really don't think that is the case. It is probably the chains. Once it warms up, it runs great though. It has 115k on it.

I just want it to hold through the winter without much damage so I can work on it in the spring.
