Iown a 97 explorer xl my problem is that when I put the tranmission in park it will not lock it up or hold the suv in place. There is also a lot of free play in the shifting arm .I had tried to adjust the cable according to a book I had and this seemed to help to lock it in park but seems to be going back to where it used to be.I still have lots of play in the shiffting arm to the point that it is hard to know what gear you are shiffting into.

Thanks Dave

are you having any other problems with the tranny because this has a tr sensor which
tells the tranny where you are at d,r,n,p,2,1 also the cable may also have a break
in it or your parking pawl may not be locking up(which apparently is the problem but is the problem internal or external)

The arm attached to the end of the shift lever, has a bracket held on by 2 bolts. Very common for one of these screws to fall out and the other one to loosen up. It is the arm that has the cable end attached to it.

A common refrain I hear from customers is "Yeah, I wondered where that little bolt came from....".

Sorry about the lack of picture, but it's fairly easy to identify.
