Hello,
I've got an '02 Explorer with some transmission problems. A couple weeks ago the O/D light started blinking and when I had the codes read it came back with P0796. Everything I read about that indicated the solenoid pack needed to be replaced. I ordered one and installed it but my problems got worse not better. Before all it did was shift hard every once in a while, but now it slips real bad in first gear only. And there are a ton of codes. P0713 P0732 P0740 P0743 P0750 P0755 P0758 P0760 P0763 P0765 P0768 P0796 P1747 P1760 P1788. I also replaced the filter while I had the pan down. Its got 168k miles on it. I don't know what else it could be, any help would be appreciated.

Thank You,
David

is your tranny oil burnt (smell it, and see if it's brown/black)? if so, chances are it needs rebuilt

No its doesnt smell burnt, it was a little dark but not black. It didnt start slipping until after i replaced the solenoid pack.

Are you sure its plugged in?

I'm pretty sure it is. The bolt went in. I would have to check in the morning.

I checked and the plug is in there pretty good. I also checked any fuses that were transmission related and they were all good too.

My thought is that your new solenoid block is bad, I have had them not work out of the box before myself but I have never had them set a code for everything electrical for the tranny.

I would have the place where it block came from warrenty it.

The slipping in low may be because its starting off in the wrong gear due to the faulty solenoid block.

Only other thing I can think of is to disconnect the block and check for bent or broken pins in the case connector. May have to use a mirror to see.

Double check number #37 15 amp fuse, its in the engine compartment.

I checked the fuse and it was good. I actually put the old block back in cause I ordered a new one to replace the one i just got. I figured it was better to have some hard shifting every once in a while as opposed to slipping at low speeds. But now the old block is slipping too. I checked the pins from the replacement block and there weren't any broken or damaged pins. Now it makes me think I acted to hastely in putting the old one back in and ordering a different block. I looked at all the wire harness and I couldn't see any signs of damage to the outside of it. I appreciate you helping me.

Well, all those codes basically means that the computer is not connected to the transmission for some reason. Obviously the first place to look especially after a solenoid block replacement was the case connector. Make sure none of the wires on the harness connector haven't pushed out.

If all thats good and the fuse is good, the next step would be to clear the codes to verify that they are hard codes (meaning happening right now) then check the harness up from the transmission and maybe back probe from the computer connector to the transmission to check for open circuits. A pin out chart for the computer connector will be needed, I should have one somewhere, I will try to find it if you get to that point.

I bought a code reader and cleared the codes now I only get P0743 P0755 and P0760. All my tools are at my friends house and hes gone for the day so I am unable to get to the plug to check it out. I will as soon as I can.

I had your initial problem so what I did was adjust the band on the drivers side of the tranny. It made it just a little better but was still slipping. I added some anti-tranny slip fluid and it immediately fixed the problem. It's be 6 month and no issue since then.

I read somewhere else that I can check the continuity of the wires from the pcm connector to fuse 37 but I think I might be doing it wrong because all of them are open if you could send that pin out that would be awesome

Well I took the connector off and checked it. All the pins were there that were supposed to be. I didnt see anything wrong with it. So I cleaned it off and reconnected it, making sure it was in there good. Then stated it up and it acted like it did before, it isnt slipping anymore but still has the O/D light flashing and check transmission is in the warning center. So I guess Im gonna try and put the other part in again and see if that works, but just making sure that connector is in there really good.

I will need to know if its a 4.0 or a 4.6 if you still need a chart.
