At around 60,000 miles I developed an intermittant slow start problem. This seems to occur mainly when low on gas. It can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to start when this happens. Usually when I hold my foot on the gas for about 5 minutes then start again it starts right up. Also, I noticed that the gas gauge always says it has a 1/4 tank more gas than it actually has. So I'm wondering if I've actually been almost on empty when I thought I had at least a 1/4 tank. However, now that I'm aware I always make sure that I have at least a 1/2 tank and notice that it still happens from time to time. I've had a diagnostic done and supposedly it showed no problems. It only happens once in a day and usually after truck has been sitting. After one slow start truck is fine. I've used various fuel injection cleaners but it doesn't seem to help. The oil is changed regularly and I've just had a tune up. It now has 82,600.00 miles and other than this problem runs great. However, I would appreciate any suggestions because of course this happens whenever I am already running late. :D

Thank you,

Before you get into the vehicle next time, try turning the key on (not start) and off and back on about 3-4 times then start it. If it starts right up, you need a fuel pump.

Check your volts and the charging system. its a higher compression more so it may take more to turn it over. also the fuel issue could be cause be this since the injectors couldnt be turning on as long as they should so you arent getting enough fuel and spark to turn it over.

Check or change your gas cap. You could be loosing fuel pressure from a bad seal in the cap. You run it a while it builds up pressure and maybe it isn't falling off so fast during the day but as it sits it has plenty of time to blow off pressure. Also it could be an old fuel filter reducing pressure due to getting clogged.

When you turn the key to the ON position, make sure you hear the fuel pump prime right away. If not, then consider replacing the fuel pump relay. Easy and cheap repair. Replacing the fuel pump would be the very last thing to try.
